Week 22: We Serve With Purpose

June 1-June 5

DAY 1
Day 1: From Consumer to Participant

Reading: Mark 10:35-45

James and John wanted positions of honor, but Jesus redirected them to a path of service. We live in a culture that trains us to consume—to ask what we can get rather than what we can give. But Jesus flips this upside down, declaring that greatness in His kingdom comes through serving others. The King of Kings wrapped a towel around His waist and washed feet. If the Son of God came not to be served but to serve, what makes us think we're exempt? Today, examine your heart: Are you attending the mission of Jesus or participating in it? The shift from consumer to participant transforms not just the church, but your very soul.
DAY 2
Day 2: Equipped to Serve

Reading: Ephesians 4:11-16

God designed the church as a body where every part plays a vital role. Church leaders aren't hired to do all the ministry—they're called to equip you to do the work of ministry. This isn't about filling volunteer slots; it's about your spiritual formation. When you serve, you're not just helping others—God is doing something transformative in you. Serving shapes humility, generosity, faithfulness, and compassion. It makes you more like Jesus. The path to spiritual maturity runs directly through participation in God's mission. You aren't a spectator watching from the sidelines; you're a vital member of Christ's body, and when you don't function, the whole body suffers.
DAY 3
Day 3: Compassion for the Harvest

Reading: Matthew 9:35-38

When Jesus saw the crowds, He didn't see an inconvenience or interruption—He saw people who were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. His response was compassion. Then He made a stunning observation: "The harvest is great, but the workers are few." The problem wasn't opportunity or resources—it was truancy. God has plenty of followers, but not everyone has reported to the field. There are people in your sphere of influence that no pastor will ever reach. They need to encounter Jesus through you—in your workplace, your neighborhood, your family. The harvest is ready, and God is inviting you to participate in bringing it in. Will you answer the call?
DAY 4
Day 4: The Cost of Discipleship

Reading: Luke 14:25-33

Dietrich Bonhoeffer famously said, "Salvation is free, but discipleship will cost you your life." Jesus never promised comfort—He promised transformation. Following Him means embracing His lifestyle, not just admiring His character. We want to be like Jesus without doing what Jesus did, but that doesn't work. Discipleship requires participation, sacrifice, and sometimes suffering. It means loving Jesus so much that everything else pales by comparison. It might cost you convenience, comfort, or a few hours each month. But there's a person on the other side of your yes—someone who desperately needs hope, freedom, and Jesus. The way of Jesus is costly, but it has always been worth it.
DAY 5
Day 5: We Serve Because We Were Served

Reading: John 13:1-17

Christianity begins with being served by Jesus. The King who washed feet, carried a cross, and moved toward us when we were far from God served us first. We don't serve to earn God's love—we serve because we've already received it. Our service isn't penance to erase sin; it's progress toward becoming more like Christ. When Jesus finished washing the disciples' feet, He asked, "Do you understand what I have done for you?" Then He commanded, "Now do for others what I have done for you." Every act of service is an echo of the gospel—a declaration that we've been loved, transformed, and sent. You are not a backpack on the body of Christ; you are the body of Christ.
