Week 23: Friends on Mission
June 8-June 12
DAY 1
Day 1: Assigned for a Reason
Reading: 1 Samuel 18:1-4
Jonathan and David's friendship began "as soon as" David slayed Goliath. God doesn't waste time bringing the right people into your life at the right moment. Some friendships are divinely assigned for specific reasons—to help you step into your purpose, to provide what you lack, or to affirm God's calling on your life. Jonathan immediately recognized David's anointing and gave him everything he needed for the next level. Today, ask yourself: Who has God assigned to me for this season? Am I recognizing and receiving what they're offering? More importantly, to whom have I been assigned? Your obedience to divine assignments can change someone's destiny.

DAY 2
Day 2: Friendship That Transcends Self-Interest
Reading: Philippians 2:3-8
Jonathan gave David his robe, armor, sword, bow, and belt—symbols of his identity, royalty, and future kingship. This wasn't just generosity; it was sacrificial surrender. Jonathan chose God's plan over his own promotion. Christ modeled this ultimate friendship by laying down His life for us. True friends on mission celebrate your calling even when it costs them something. They're not competing with you; they're completing you. The depth of friendship isn't measured by how long you've known someone, but by how willing they are to decrease so you can increase. God is calling you to be this kind of friend—one who prioritizes His mission over personal ambition.

DAY 3
Day 3: Seasons Change, Covenant Remains
Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
After their initial meeting, David and Jonathan's paths diverged dramatically. David ran for his life while Jonathan remained in the palace. Yet their covenant never broke. Some friends are seasonal—not because the friendship failed, but because God's plan required different paths. The hurt comes when we try to force lifetime commitment from seasonal relationships. Not everyone is meant to walk every chapter with you. Release people with gratitude when their season ends, trusting that God is repositioning both of you for greater impact. Seasonal doesn't mean shallow; it means purposeful. Honor what was, embrace what is, and trust God for what's coming.

DAY 4
Day 4: The Ultimate Friendship
Reading: John 15:12-17
Jesus called His disciples "friends"—ordinary, flawed people who would soon abandon Him. Yet He laid down His life for them anyway. This is the friendship that anchors all others. Before you can be a true friend on mission, you must first be a friend of Jesus. He doesn't call you based on your resume or perfection. He calls you because He chose you. This friendship offers what no human relationship can: unconditional acceptance, eternal security, and perfect understanding. When you're rooted in friendship with Christ, you can navigate the comings and goings of human relationships with grace. You won't demand from people what only Jesus can provide.

DAY 5
Day 5: Mission Over Membership
Reading: Matthew 28:18-20
Your destiny is personal, but your mission is communal. God never intended for you to live the Christian life alone. The Great Commission is a "co-mission"—we're called to run together toward something bigger than ourselves. At Mercy Road, we don't do membership; we do missional partnership. Churches aren't country clubs for the comfortable; they're launching pads for the called. You need friends who are built around something greater than both of you—the mission of seeing people far from God discipled into passionate relationship with Jesus. Stop looking for friends who just make you comfortable. Start looking for friends who make you courageous. The mission is for a lifetime.
