The Math Ain't Mathing

Mark Johnson

What happens when the math of our lives simply does not add up? When our resources fall short of our needs, our relationships feel depleted, and our faith feels stretched thin? This message takes us deep into John 6, where Jesus feeds a massive crowd with nothing more than a boy's small lunch of five barley loaves and two fish. The miracle is stunning, but what is even more striking is what happens before the miracle. Jesus asks his disciples to calculate the cost, to face the shortage head-on, to look at what they do not have and name it honestly. That moment of honest reckoning is where so many of us get stuck. We avoid facing the gaps in our finances, our relationships, and our spiritual lives because the numbers are uncomfortable. But this passage reminds us that God is not afraid of our deficiencies. He never has been. The real turning point comes when the crowd is asked to sit down, to stop striving, and to let something greater take over. That posture of surrender is where the miraculous begins. When we release what little we have into hands greater than our own, multiplication happens in ways our calculations never could have predicted.
